Remnants I: Photography and the Nature of Remembering

Remnants I explores photography not as documentation, but as a site where memory is formed, altered, and questioned. Bringing together photographs, video, wallpaper, and sculptural elements, the exhibition considers how remembered experiences shape our sense of self and what happens when those memories become fragmented or inaccessible.

Drawing on family photographs from her childhood in Ireland, Marrinan moves images from analog slides to digital scans and back into a physical photographic process. Polaroids are subjected to water, weather, time, and physical manipulation, allowing them to float, separate, shift, and reform. The buckets used in this process, objects associated with her mother’s household, introduce colors reminiscent of girlhood and a tangible connection to the past.

The second body of work turns toward the present, reflecting on how each photograph becomes a memory the moment it is made and how these images may one day become fragments of experiences that can no longer be fully recalled. A large-scale photograph of a house becomes wallpaper covering the gallery’s back wall, shifting the photograph from an image to an environment.

Together, the works invite viewers to consider photography as both a catalyst for remembering and a reminder of memory’s instability.
